The Directed Studies program at SHCS is a comprehensive educational program offered to students needing extra assistance to reach their learning potential. We believe that children are uniquely created by God and differ in learning styles and strengths. Different Directed Studies classes are available to assist students with their academic needs.

The Directed Studies program consists of the following individualized programs:

  • Early Reading Intervention is available for students who are struggling with the basics of reading in grades K-2. It is our desire to identify and assist these students as early as possible. The ERI classes are taught by an Orton Gillingham trained teacher. *
  • Resource - separate classes in reading, spelling, and language arts are available for students with mild-moderate language based learning disabilities in grades 1-5. Resource classes are taught by an Orton Gillingham trained teacher. Students must have an IEP or diagnosis from a private psychologist to be eligible. *
  • Mentoring is available for middle and high school students who are struggling to keep pace with the academic program and need additional help to organize and manage school life. *
  • Accelerated/Gifted - enrichment classes offering extra instruction in the areas of science, history, math, and writing are available for the gifted child in grades 3-5. Children must score in the 90% percentile on their reading, math, composite, or OTIS Lennon portion of their standardized achievement test and have at least a 90% grade average to be eligible. *
  • Individual Tutoring/Help classes - individual and group tutoring sessions are available for students needing extra assistance in various subject areas. (Grades K-12) *
  • Speech/Language- private speech/language evaluations and therapy are available on campus through a professional speech pathologist.*

*Additional fees apply.

Possible future resources:

  • Bridge math classes - are available for students new to SHCS that may not have all the skills needed to be successful in a more advanced curriculum. Bridge classes are in addition to the regular math classes.
